PART-TIME POSITION 3 pm – 7 pm, Monday - Friday
Role Overview
The Volunteer Coordinator at Palmetto Literacy Council supports the organization’s mission by recruiting, training, scheduling, and pairing volunteer tutors with students who need literacy support. The role ensures that tutoring relationships are well‑matched, well‑supported, and aligned with PLC’s commitment to individualized learning. The coordinator serves as the primary point of contact for volunteers, families, and partner organizations.
Key Responsibilities
- Recruit volunteer tutors through community outreach, events, partnerships, and digital platforms working with a volunteer committee.
- Screen and onboard volunteers, organize and run orientations, and training on PLC’s tutoring model.
- Pair tutors with students based on skill level, availability, location, and learning needs to ensure effective one‑on‑one matches. Administer a baseline formative assessment at the time of pairing. Assign tutor materials as needed to help the students learn.
- Support tutoring relationships by checking in regularly with volunteers and/or Volunteer Liaison(s) to address concerns and provide resources or guidance.
- Maintain accurate records of volunteer information, student needs, tutoring hours, and match progress.
- Coordinate schedules to ensure consistent weekly tutoring sessions.
- Collaborate with staff to understand student referrals, literacy goals, and program capacity.
- Plan volunteer appreciation efforts, including recognition events, thank‑you communications, and retention initiatives.
- Represent PLC in the community by speaking with partners, attending outreach events, and promoting volunteer opportunities.
- Ensure compliance and safety, including adherence to PLC policies, reporting requirements, and child‑protection standards.
Skills and Qualifications
- Strong communication and relationship‑building skills with volunteers, families, and community partners.
- Ability to match volunteers and students thoughtfully, considering learning needs, personalities, and logistics.
- Excellent organization and time‑management abilities.
- Experience with databases, spreadsheets, and volunteer‑management tools.
- Experience in education, tutoring, nonprofit work, or community engagement is helpful.
- Problem‑solving skills and the ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism.
- Flexibility to support occasional evening or weekend events.
